What Actually Happens

In Sessions

Every session starts with the same question: what color is your body reaching for right now — not your brain, not your wardrobe history, not what you think looks good on you? The answer to that question is where we begin.

The first fifteen minutes are for connecting on a human level. We talk about what colors light you up and then we transition to the swatches. I pull out my 150 dye swatches and you hold them, one at a time, near your face and against your skin.

From there, you’re in it. I show you the basic technique and then I mostly get out of your way as you develop your pattern. Your piece cures for 6 hours, then gets rinsed and dried.

This session is for people who want to understand their whole color story, not just today’s color. We work through warm vs. cool, seasonal palette identification, and your personal color ecosystem — the core hue, the supporting allies, the neutrals, the contrast color.

You leave with a hand-dyed bandana in your personalized palette, a take-home swatch, and the language to use when you shop, dress, or decide what to create. This session works as a standalone or as a starting point before a Dash-Dye or portrait session.

A Power Portrait is a collaboration. We start by finding your color — or, if you’re drawn to the Michigan Birds series, we research your bird together: its coloring, migration pattern, behavior, and what it might reflect about you. Then we build a full wearable look in those colors.

Then we go outside. I photograph you in motion — not posed, not performing, but moving through a landscape that fits your colors. We usually work near sunset in parks along the Grand River or in natural spaces around West Michigan. That moment is what I’m always looking for. The images capture it.

What to Bring

No expectations about what color you’ll choose — let your body answer that. If you’re dyeing something you own, make sure it’s a natural fiber garment (cotton, linen, rayon, hemp). Wear clothing you can move in and don’t mind getting a little dye on (this is a time when polyester is a good choice).

Where Sessions Happen

Most personal, family and group sessions are held at the More ∞ Joy studio and garden in Grand Rapids (get directions). Pop-up sessions happen throughout West Michigan at festivals, community events, and partner venues. Group and corporate sessions can travel to your location.
