This Sunday, from 1:00–4:00 PM at The Lit in downtown Grand Rapids, something simple and powerful happened:
80 people showed up to try something new.
Hobby Hop gathered a room full of curious humans and invited them to rotate through 10 different hands-on experiences—from sword fighting to ukulele, martial arts to yoga—each one offering a small doorway back into doing something with your hands.
Because somewhere along the way, as we grow older, trying new things gets harder.
Not because we’ve lost interest…
but because it starts to feel like there’s too much to learn, too much to buy, too much to figure out just to begin.
The Hope Behind the Table

My intention with More ∞ Joy was simple:
To make creativity feel immediate, accessible, and intuitive.
No supplies to bring.
No pressure to be “good.”
Just 10 minutes, 150 colors, and a blank 22×22 cotton bandana.
A starting point.
What Actually Happened

At first, there’s hesitation.
People hover.
They look around.
They ask, “What do I do?”
But then something shifts.
The moment the fabric gets wet, wrung out, and placed in their hands…
their attention sharpens.

They begin choosing colors.
Trusting instinct.
Letting go of rules.
And just like that—they take over.
One of my favorite moments:
Two friends, standing side by side, choosing completely opposite palettes—each one a reflection of their inner world, translated into color.
That’s the magic of this work.
You don’t just make something.
You reveal something.
Why This Matters

Trying something new is vulnerable.
You might be bad at it—for a minute.
You might surprise yourself.
You might unlock something you didn’t know was there.
But when you’re in a space where everyone is learning together, something shifts:
Curiosity replaces pressure.
Play replaces perfection.
And growth feels… possible.
Start Where You Are

Whether it’s with color, movement, music, or something you’ve been quietly curious about…
Try something new.
Let your hands explore.
Let yourself be a beginner again.
Keep practicing becoming more you.
