Dash-Dye for Educators

Classrooms, orientations, clubs and campus events. Three ways to bring color science and hands-on dyeing to your students, plus a free color curriculum you can teach from.
Grand Rapids, Michigan
For Educators Dyed

Color is science, art, history and feeling all at once. That makes it one of the best things you can put in students’ hands.

Dash-dyeing is the dye method I developed in my studio: you wet a piece, sprinkle powdered dye, mist it and watch the color move. Students see chemistry happen in real time, make choices as they go and leave with something they made. I’ve dyed with incoming freshmen at Davenport University’s orientation and taken 80 people through a bandana in about ten minutes each at Hobby Hop. Classrooms are my favorite rooms.

Host an Event: clubs, fundraisers and fairs

For student-run events, I bring the dye studio for a $50 setup fee, and each student pays $10 for each piece they dash. It works beautifully as a club fundraiser or a booth at a campus fair.

Special Event: orientations and class projects

When your school wants to cover the cost, a Special Event includes the setup and the first ten items, with extra pieces at $10 each. Provide shirts printed with your school, team or program logo, and every student dyes their own over it. It’s a natural fit for orientation, spirit week, graduation and team days.

A color talk for your class or campus

I offer an hour-long talk on color: how light becomes color, why some colors calm us and others wake us up, and how color and identity are tied together. It can stand alone or open a dye session, and it works for art, design, psychology, chemistry and wellness programs.

What students learn

Dash-dyeing touches more subjects than you’d expect:

  • Chemistry: fiber-reactive dye forms a covalent bond with cellulose, so the color becomes part of the fabric.
  • Physics: color is light at different wavelengths. Blended dyes split into their parts as they travel across wet fabric.
  • Art and design: the color wheel, harmony, value and contrast, made hands-on.
  • Psychology and wellness: how color affects mood and how we read each other.
  • Sustainability: upcycling old clothes instead of buying new.

Free lessons you can teach from

My color resources are free and written in plain language. Start with Color Frequencies for the science, Color Harmony for the color wheel, Color Psychology for the research and Choosing Fabrics to Dash Dye for the chemistry of dyeing.

Built for every learner

I’m an autistic practitioner, and my sessions are built to be sensory-friendly. Let me know ahead of time if your students need lower lights, quieter music, fewer color choices, breaks or a support person. Every student can pause, step back or change their mind. Nothing is locked in until they say so.

Good to know

  • Ages: elementary through university. Younger students dash with a grown-up nearby.
  • Safety: I bring gloves, aprons and masks, and handle all powder setup. Safety data sheets are available on request.
  • Time: a piece takes a few minutes; groups rotate through in small batches.
  • Fabric: cotton, rayon, linen or hemp. Polyester won’t take the dye.

Find your way in

Not sure which one fits?

In the studio, a Friends & Family Dye Session fits up to six. At your place, Host an Event if everyone pays for their own pieces, or book a Special Event if you’re treating your people. Tell me about your group and I’ll help you choose.

More joy is possible.
