Color Genres: Pale Tones · Pastels · Brights · Dimmed Tones · Moderates · Vivids · Dusky Shades · Rich Shades · Jewel Tones
Pale Tones are colors with light value and soft chroma. Light and softened. A whisper of color over a lot of light.
The nine color genres come from Anuschka Rees and her book Personal Color. Her system is the clearest map of color I know, and it’s worth owning. Find Personal Color at anuschkarees.com ↗
Who looks great in pale tones
- Soft Neutral skin: 10 of my pale tones, like 046 Ivory, 075 Sea Glass, 076 Seafoam
- Cool skin: 4 of my pale tones, like 075 Sea Glass, 077 Celadon, 109 Ice Blue
- Warm skin: 3 of my pale tones, like 043 Camel, 045 Ecru, 046 Ivory
- Olive skin: 0 of my pale tones
Depth matters too. Lighter genres usually flatter lighter skin and low contrast between hair, eyes and skin. Your hair and eyes tell me the rest in a session.
How to wear pale tones
Pale tones are quiet. They make beautiful base layers, linens and summer whites with a hint of color. If pale tones wash you out, wear them below the waist and bring a deeper color up near your face.
Shop every dye in pale tones
I have 10 dyes in this genre. Tap any shade to see its hex code and build a palette around it below. Add to cart right from here.
My library doesn’t have pale tones in every family yet. Missing for now: reds and pinks, oranges, aquas and turquoises, magentas. When a genre has a gap, mixing two dyes on the fabric can get you close: add a little gray to soften, or a lighter dye to lift.
