For her Power Portrait, Marlise embodied grape—a shade rich with emotional complexity, creative longing, and quiet devotion. It’s the color of candlelit rooms, sacred rituals, and heart-centered connection. Not loud, not hidden—just deeply present.
We first met at an ecstatic dance, where we orbited one another like celestial bodies, each on our journey but affecting each other through rhythm and proximity. Marlise wasn’t always comfortable in movement—years ago, she considered herself a reluctant dancer. But something shifted. She chose to learn. To show up. To move anyway. Through Lindy Hop classes and countless swing dances, she learned to let the flow inside her be seen outside—her power now radiates from her chest and extends to her fingertips.
Her grape is the perfect mirror for that evolution. We photographed her in motion—effortless, regal, open. She radiates both rest and flow, offering her presence like an open hand, both playful and reverent.
As an art educator, Marlise works with individuals with Down syndrome, using art as a tool for healing and connection. She finds joy in the physicality of creation—the feeling of paint squishing through her fingers, the raw, sensory nature of making. This fall, she’ll begin a somatic education program in Boston, expanding her ability to guide others through healing that lives in the body, not just the mind.
