What Actually Happens
In Color Sessions
Dash dye sessions take an hour and a half and participants leave with items bagged and ready to be washed.
The first fifteen minutes are for connecting on a human level. We talk about what colors light you up, then transition to the swatches — I pull out my 150 dye swatches and you hold them, one at a time, near your face and against your skin. From there, you’re in it and I mostly get out of your way as you develop your patterns.
Color Analysis Sessions take an hour and participants leave with a scarf in their chosen palette.
This session is for people who want to understand their whole color story, not just today’s color. We work through warm vs. cool, seasonal palette identification, and your personal color ecosystem — the core hue, the supporting allies, the neutrals, the contrast color.
You leave with a hand-dyed scarf in your personalized palette, a take-home swatch, and the language to use when you shop, dress, or decide what to create. This session works as a standalone or as a starting point before a Dash-Dye or portrait session.
A Power Portrait is a collaboration and takes two hours. We start by finding your color — or, if you’re drawn to the Michigan Birds series, we research your bird together: its coloring, migration pattern, behavior, and what it might reflect about you. Then we build a full wearable look in those colors.
Then we go outside. I photograph you in motion — not posed, not performing, but moving through a landscape that fits your colors. We usually work near sunset in parks along the Grand River or in natural spaces around West Michigan. That moment is what I’m always looking for. The images capture it.
If you are participating in the Michigan Birds series, session fees are waived. I can’t wait to witness your joy blossom.
Pop-up dye days work a little differently than our private sessions — but the core moment is identical: you, your colors, your hands on fabric.
At an event, you’ll bring something to dye — a faded t-shirt, a thrifted find, anything worth giving a second life. We’ll talk briefly about what you’re drawn to, and I’ll help you build a small palette before you start dashing.
Each piece is priced $10 per item rather than per session, since you’re sharing the day with everyone else there.
You’ll work at your own pace, on your own piece, alongside other people doing the same.
Pieces need 4 hours to fully set and can be bagged to be washed at home or can be left at the studio. By the end, you’ll rinse your piece and take it home ready for its first wash.
Where It Happens
Most personal, family, and group sessions are held at the More ∞ Joy studio and garden in Grand Rapids (get directions). Pop-up workshops and dye days happen throughout West Michigan — at festivals, parks, private properties, and partner venues. Group and corporate sessions can also travel to your location.
What to Bring
No expectations about what color you’ll choose — let your body answer that. If you’re dyeing something you own, make sure it’s a natural fiber garment (read more about Choosing Fabrics to Dash Dye). Wear clothing you can move in and don’t mind getting a little dye on — polyester is actually a smart choice here, since it won’t take the dye.
How To Dash Dye
Dash Dyeing is a new way to transform garments. This isn’t your typical tie-dye. We’re changing how things get done. No tying required. If you’re curious about the chemistry behind dash dyeing — what’s actually happening when pigment meets damp fabric — head over to our How To Dash Dye page.
