Hue Position
Blue occupies the short-wavelength end of the primary spectrum (450–490nm). Its tendency to scatter in atmosphere is why the sky appears blue.
Undertones
Warm blues lean toward violet (periwinkle, sapphire). Cool blues lean toward cyan (sky blue, cerulean).
Chroma Range
From soft & muted (earthy, wearable) to vivid & clear (bold, expressive) — 18 shades spanning the full spectrum.
Frequency
450–490nm. Scatters in atmosphere (why the sky is blue). High-frequency, expansive.
Color History
A History Written in Blue
Blue is the last basic color term to appear in most languages — ancient Greek had no word for blue, and Homer described the sea as ‘wine-dark.’ The Egyptians were the first to produce synthetic blue — Egyptian Blue, made from heating copper, silica, and calcium — around 2500 BCE. Lapis lazuli, mined exclusively in Afghanistan, was ground into ultramarine — literally ‘beyond the sea’ — and was more expensive than gold in medieval Europe, reserved for the robes of the Virgin Mary. The development of Prussian Blue in 1704 was one of the first synthetic pigments, democratizing blue for artists worldwide. Hokusai’s ‘Great Wave’ was only possible because of it.
Color Psychology
How Blue Works on the Mind
Blue is the most cognitively complex color. It slows the heart rate, reduces blood pressure, and activates deep thinking. Blue is associated with trust, integrity, reliability, and depth. It is the dominant color of global corporations and governments for exactly these reasons — it signals stable authority. Darker blues become contemplative and introspective; lighter blues become freeing and expansive.
Energy & Frequency
The Vibration of Blue
Energy Work & Chakra Correspondence
Blue corresponds to the throat chakra (communication, truth) in lighter tones, and the third eye chakra (intuition, vision) in deeper indigo tones. Blue is the color of the inner life — of meditation, of the space between thoughts, of the interior landscape.
Light, Wavelength & Physics
Blue light (approximately 450–490nm) has the shortest wavelength of the primary colors, meaning it scatters most readily in the atmosphere — which is why the sky is blue. Blue is the color that reaches us from infinite distance, vibrating at one of the highest frequencies visible to the human eye.
