Cyan: The Depth Between Sea and Sky

Cyan lives in the luminous space between green and blue — the color of tropical shallows, of morning light on ice, of glaciers and parakeet feathers. It is the color of clarity, of spaces where you can see all the way to the bottom.

✦ Spring: Warm aqua — Turquoise, Aqua Marine, Cayman Isle Green

Cyan lives between blue and green — carrying blue's calming clarity and green's fresh vitality. It's the color of shallow tropical water, of light after a storm, of possibility. Turquoise and Aqua Marine feel alive and warm; Teal Blue and Kingfisher Blue carry cool depth; Seafoam, Celadon, and Sea Glass are the most restful — barely-there and serene.

Color History

A History Written in Cyan

Cyan as a named color is relatively recent — the word derives from the Greek ‘kyanos’ (dark blue-green), used to describe both lapis lazuli and the kingfisher’s feathers. Ancient cultures had no single word that separated our modern sense of cyan from blue or green, yet they prized its appearances intensely. Egyptian faience — a turquoise-glazed ceramic used for amulets and tomb goods for 5,000 years — is the first deliberately manufactured cyan material in history. The development of process printing in the 20th century made cyan one of the four foundational colors (CMYK) by which all printed images are composed.

Color Psychology

How Cyan Works on the Mind

Cyan is uniquely refreshing. It combines the calming properties of blue with the revitalizing properties of green, producing a color that restores without sedating. It is associated with clarity of mind, open communication, and emotional transparency. Cyan environments reduce mental fatigue and promote focused creativity.

Energy & Frequency

The Vibration of Cyan

Energy Work & Chakra Correspondence

Cyan bridges the heart and throat chakras — it is the color of speaking from the heart, of truth expressed with love. It governs honest communication, attentive listening, and the courage to be transparent. Working with cyan supports any practice of authentic expression.

Light, Wavelength & Physics

Cyan wavelengths (approximately 490–510nm) are the wavelength of clear water — the ocean transmits cyan light deepest before absorbing it. The experience of looking into tropical water, that impossible luminous teal-green, is the cyan frequency in its most natural expression.
